On November 17, 1992, my phone rang at 11 p.m. You never get a good phone call at that time of night. It was my sister.

“Daren, something has happened to Dad. We think he’s had a heart attack or something. The paramedics were here, and they can’t revive him. You need to come quickly.”

My dad was gone. When I arrived, his body had been taken away to harvest organs for others’ use.

He was only 57 years old. I had no idea the last time I spoke with him on the phone it would be my last.

My dad was an amazing storyteller. I treasure the memories of his antics growing up on a farm in central Oregon. However, the stories are gone now. All we have left is a picture. Its two dimensions lack the depth that was my father.

Recently, my son and business partner said, “Dad, I sure wish I had a book of Grampa Jere’s stories.” The surge of emotion that hit me caused me to realize the great loss we had endured but hadn’t even realized until now.

In 2004, my son, Nathan, and I started a publishing company to create books for different organizations that had a story to tell. We work with churches, drug and alcohol recovery programs and even a lending institution to tell their stories to their constituents. We’ve put together a very sharp team of professionals.
